Getting There Matera

Despite being located in southern Italy in the ‘instep’ of Italy’s boot, travelling to Matera and the Basilicata region is very straightforward. Below are some of the different ways to get to the region.

 By Air
There are two international airports in neighbouring Puglia. You can easily hire a car from there or take the train. www.aeroportodibari.it International Airport is 50 minutes from the masseria plots. www.aeroportodibrindisi.it International Airport is 80 minutes drive from the masseria plots.

By Road
From Bari take the SS96 to Altamura then continue to Matera.
From Naples take the motorway towards Salerno then follow the A3 motorway direction Reggio Calabria. At Sicignano go on to Potenza then take the SS407 (Basentana) until you reach the turning for Matera near Ferradina Scalo. Go on to Matera.
From Calabria take the SS106 Ionian coast road. Near Metaponto take the turning for the SS175 road to Matera centro.

By Rail
The nearest stations are at Bari, Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico and Metaponto. If arriving at Bari station take the regional “Apulo Lucane ferrovie” which is a 90-minute trip. To find the ticket office at Bari station, go out of the northern exit, go straight on (the bus station is on your left) until you reach a yellow building. It isn’t obvious that this is a station as there is nothing written on it! The ticket from Bari to Matera costs 4 euro and can only be bought there. The Ferrovie Appulo Lucane web site is: www.fal-srl.it it’s in Italian so you might want to check connections, times and distances on www.trenitalia.com

By Sea

You can arrive by sea at Puglia and then drive or take the train (see above). Puglia’s main ports are at Bari and Brindisi. Bari ferries go to Corfu, Dubrovnik (Croatia), Igoumenitsa, Kotor (Montenegro) Patras, and Durres (Albania). Brindisi ferries go to Corfu and Paxi.
