Mater Sacra 2015

The fifth edition of this spectacular event features amazing light, sound and drama. More than 60 costumed participants and 15 horseback riders in Matera's old town and the sassi neighbourhoods recreate the Processo a Gesù (Procession of Christ) in unforgettable fashion in the week leading up to Easter. The concept of Mater Sacra is to use the most cutting edge technology (lasers, video and audio) to tell one of the most ancient and moving stories, that of the Passion of the Christ. It is all the more appropriate that Matera is the scene of this blending of ancient and modern as the city itself has epitomised this in its recent astounding renaissance. The event changes over the days to reflect each part of the story at the appropriate time in Holy Week, the culmination being the raising of the three crosses against the dramatic backdrop of the Matera landscape. Open Data Day is “a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world's local, regional and national governments.” As ever, the net-savvy and forward-thinking Comune of Matera have decided to use Open Data Day to promote the ancient city. Il Cinema della Verità - 23,30 January, 2015

The death of the famous film director on January 10, 2015 at age 92, has prompted this affectionate tribute which will be held in Palazzo Lanfranchi, Matera on January 23 and 30. Rosi was an honorary citizen of Matera and three of his most important films were made in and around the city itself, probably the most famous being Christ Stopped at Eboli. A classmate of former Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Rosi made a significant impact on the international film industry. The British Film Institute commented that: “he will be remembered above all as the master of the ‘cine-investigation’ and an influence on several generations of artists, including the likes of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Paolo Sorrentino". Pasolini a Matera, until 25 January, 2015

This exhibition has been extended into late January by popular demand and if things go on the way they are, will probably be extended again. It has already attracted 16,000 visitors to Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019. Held at the city's MUSMA museum, the exhibition documents the 50th anniversary of the making of Pasolini's film Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo about the life of Christ and recently described as “the best film on the life of Jesus ever made” by the Osservatore Romano. It was filmed in Matera, which Pasolini turned into his version of Jerusalem. Pasolini was a film director, artist, poet, actor, writer and journalist. He was also anti-establishment, anti-church and gay. The film's subject matter in this context became highly controversial as did the choice of Matera, at the time a city with appalling living conditions deemed a national disgrace. The Catholic Church was outraged and critical opinion divided when the film launched at the 1964 Venice Film Festival. The exhibition is divided into six sections, one dedicated entirely to Matera. There are interviews, film clips, photos, documents and art works including sculptures and paintings. In an exhibition documenting what is considered by many to be Pasolini's greatest work, Matera is at centre stage. Seeing how desperately poor the city was half a century ago makes its current spectacular renaissance all the more remarkable. Where: MUSMA Museum, Matera. Price: See website below. L'Universo di Pier Paolo Pasolini, Lecce , 26 June – 2 Nov, 2014

Pier Paolo Pasolini is one of Italy's great cultural icons whose talents spanned many disciplines. Film director, poet, philosopher, actor, painter, journalist and much, much more, Pasolini was a true intellectual colossus whose influence is still felt almost 40 years after his death, at just 53 years old, in 1975. Such is the importance of Pasolini that the city of Lecce, where this exhibition is currently being staged, included it as part of its bid to become European Capital of Culture 2019. Calling this merely “an exhibition” is doing it a disservice as, like the man himself, it does not fit neatly into such a simple category. Think of it more as a multi-media experience involving film clips, books, images, audio clips, songs as well as paintings from this prolific and unique Italian. Should you find yourself in Lecce in the next few weeks there are few better ways to spend time than to immerse yourself for a few hours in the controversial, provocative, outspoken, multi-faceted world of Pasolini.   Where: Castello Carlo V, Lecce Price: Euro 7 with various reductions available When: 26 June – 2 November, 2014 Website: (in Italian) Click here

Il Mito di Leonardo a Otranto, Castello Aragonese, Otranto, 12 July – 30 September 2014

The full title of this exhibition is intended to intrigue. “Il Mito di Leonardo a Otranto. Monna Lisa e la Gioconda nuda attraverso cinque secoli” translates as “The myth of Leonardo at Otranto. Mona Lisa and the nude Gioconda over five centuries.” On the promotion poster above, the amused eyes of the subject appear above the phrase “I know something you don't know”, although by the end of the show you should be a lot better informed! The much-discussed topless Mona Lisa, also known as the Monna Vanna, is attributed to da Vinci's pupil Giacomo Caprotti who used the name Andrea Salai. One theory is that the painting is a copy of a lost masterpiece by da Vinci. Others have it that the Mona Lisa herself is in fact Caprotti, a favourite of Leonardo's, something dismissed outright by the Louvre. Wherever the truth lies, there is no doubt that the Mona Lisa has inspired and enchanted since the early 1500's. This exhibition looks at both the story of the painting itself (and the topless pastiche) and the many works since that have been inspired by the enigmatic portrait. The show tells its tale using a variety of forms, including installations, video, images, talks and workshops. It also highlights and references Leonardo's connections with Puglia and Otranto. Calici sotto le Stelle (Goblets of Stars), Copertino, Lecce - 10 August, 2014

For many years, Puglia's Movimento Turismo di Vino has run a series of events in August to showcase not only the wine and wine producers of the region but the cultural and artistic resources that Puglia has in abundance. The evocatively named Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars) is timed to coincide with the spectacular Perseids meteor shower which fills the night sky with shooting stars in the first two weeks of August. The second night of this, Puglia's only open-air wine tasting event to promote wine-tasting outside the wineries, is on August 10th in the ancient little town of Copertino in Salento. Visitors are taken on a wine trail through the winding streets of the town and in between star gazing and enjoying the entertainment can try a glass or two of Puglia's most delicious wine from the many participating wine producers lining the streets. A must-see event for anyone interested in wine, stars, local culture or a combination of all three. Salento – Walking on Sunshine

Released this summer, Walking on Sunshine is the feel-good romantic movie of the year, complete with 1980s soundtrack (think Bananarama, Madonna, George Michael) and obligatory complicated love story. Much of the filming was done in Puglia's glorious Salento region, particularly Baroque capital Lecce, although seaside towns and the fabulous Lido Cocoloco at Torre San Giovanni also get more than a look in. Directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini, Walking on Sunshine stars Giulio Berruti as Raf and Hannah Atherton and Annabel Scholey as the two sisters involved in the love triangle with the handsome Italian. Leona Lewis of the X-Factor makes her acting debut in the movie too. The film introduces a whole new generation of film-goers to the beauty of Salento and the Puglia tourist board is hoping for the same boost that tiny Greek island Skopelos got when it was the location for the 2008 hit Mamma Mia. Visitor numbers to the island the following year were the highest ever in what became known as the Mamma Mia effect. If chick flicks are your thing and you love the 80s and beautiful scenery, then this could be the summer romance you have been looking for!

ESSENTIS in SUNDAY TIMES, 1 June 2014

ESSENTIS CEO Francesco Carlucci is quoted in a Sunday Times article on 1 June, 2014 which discusses the growing popularity of Puglia as a place for foreigner buyers to invest in property.   The article describes Carlucci as having “ cornered the market in new-build luxury masserie in Puglia,” and explains that he has now completed 25 properties since 2007.   “High-profile people choose Puglia for the simple, low-key existence that they can no longer enjoy in Tuscany, which has become so glossy it's like a film set,” Carlucci says, also admitting that Puglia “has become more sophisticated, with growing numbers of five-star hotels and Ibiza-type beach clubs, such as La Dolce Riva in Otranto and the Punta della Suina in Gallipoli.”   The article explains how a shortage of high-end rental properties means masserie such as the ones built by Essentis command high letting rates of up to Euro 19,000 a week. “A Euro 5m property in Tuscany typically makes less than 50% of the income of a Euro 2m property in Puglia,” Carlucci says.   If you are interested in owning one of only four properties available in 2015/2016 then get in touch now.

Matera - The Countdown Begins...

Matera, one of the five oldest cities in the world, is one of the shortlisted cities for European Capital of Culture 2019.   The final decision will be announced in 2015, but just being on the shortlist can have a significant effect on the economy and tourism of the city concerned.   As the countdown to the announcement begins, it is an excellent time to buy property in and around Matera, located in the region of Basilicata, in the instep of Italy's boot.   Essentis is having its own countdown to the unveiling of its innovative new masseria designs for 2015/ 2016. The projects they have planned for their plots near Matera are nothing short of amazing. Nothing like this has ever been done in the area before - think cutting edge design and technology meets ancient location. More details soon...

Cortili aperti, Lecce - 25 May 2014

It's a little like leafing through the pages of a family album. The names themselves don't reveal much, if anything. But ask the right questions, dig a little deeper and you'll be richly rewarded.   This 20th edition of Cortili Aperti (open courtyards) allows visitors to get a sense of southern Italy's past. Hidden secrets are concealed behind the heavy doors of palazzi open for just one weekend a year to satisfy the curiosity of visitors and locals alike.   The search for “hidden Lecce” begins by leaving Porta Napoli behind and venturing forth along via Palmieri where historic buildings are lined up one after the other like a string of pearls. Experience Italian-style gardens and the perfume of citrus, walk under pergolas that still keep vigil over the quiet idleness of the lucky few and start to dream a little. This visit to the courtyards of the Florence of the south opens a window onto the Baroque city's exotic soul. Ten Reasons to Buy in Puglia

header-newsletter-essentis

1 Accessibility. Puglia may be located in the heel of Italy's boot, but it is served by not one but two international airports at Bari and Brindisi.
italia-puglia
2 Weather. The tip of the heel, Salento, has 300 sunny days a year, its microclimate means it never gets too hot as it is cooled by breezes from its two seas. Here's today's forecast.   3 Variety of scenery. It doesn't matter if you have a weakness for beaches, crave the countryside or seek the city sights, all are within easy reach.

variety-scenery.jpg

4 It's got it all going on. Puglia has a thriving arts scene and is a popular concert venue. It is the host of several important film festivals as well as exhibitions, shows, fairs and festas. It is a sports lover's delight and a shopper's paradise. Its natural beauty and rich history mean those not after designer labels or holes in one are also catered for.
event
5 Food, glorious food (and wine). People in Puglia love to eat and as well as myriad local dishes with their own dedicated “sagra”, there are thousands of eateries to try.
food-puglia
6 Growth in popularity. Thanks to media coverage, Puglia is now on many people's radar, with a resulting increase in tourism. Lecce is on the shortlist as European Capital of Culture 2019. There is a demand for luxury property to rent that is greater than the supply.   7 Blue Flag beaches. Salento has some of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Italy and their Blue Flag designation means they are not the only ones that think so.

Torre dell'orso, 10 mins from masserie projects

8 Reasonable cost of living. If you are used to the jaw-dropping prices in Chiantishire then you will be delighted to hear that a night out or a weekly shop does not involve a second mortgage.   9 Friendly locals. The people of Puglia are warm and welcoming to visitors, rather than jaded and wary as you might find in other more famous places further north.   10 Essentis Masserias. These luxurious, bespoke, bold houses standing in acres of their own olive groves in Salento, Puglia. They can also be rented out during the holiday season to more than cover costs, although they are so gorgeous you will probably want to keep them all to yourself.

Lecce European Film festival - 2014

Last week saw the lovely Baroque city of Lecce in Salento play host to the great and the good at the 15th edition of the annual Lecce European Film festival.

claudia-cardinale

Claudia Cardinale

Italian film legend Claudia Cardinale was one of the VIP guests and the festival showcased some of the most important films of her career as well as a photographic exhibition featuring this much-loved actress. The festival is just one of numerous international events that take place in Salento every year. It is a buzzing place with a lively arts scene and its young population are among Italy's most motivated and talented creatives. Choosing this location to build the ESSENTIS signature masseria villas was no accident as their innovative designs fit perfectly with the Salento ethos of dynamic and enterprising craftsmanship.

Puglia – The Clever Buyers Luxury Investment

Puglia has long been the holiday destination of choice for many Italians. Their little secret, if you like. Now word is out and a growing number of foreign visitors are discovering the delights of this unique region for themselves. With the increase in tourists comes a demand for luxury rentals that is completely outstripping supply.   Savvy buyers are cashing in on the trend by buying deluxe property, such as the masseria villas created by Essentis, which can be rented out in the peak summer months. This more than pays for running costs and even turns a profit if rented for more than five or six weeks.   Why not “try before you buy” by renting one yourself?

Matera is the Safest Place in Italy

On top of its other achievements (like being on the shortlist for European Capital of Culture 2019 and being declared as “La citta' piu' tranquilla d'Italia” in the 2013 Criminalita' Sole 24 Ore report , the ancient city of Matera has just been voted the Italian art city that tourists feel safest in.   The poll was conducted by Hrs, a leading global business travel provider. Matera, already a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much loved location of film directors, beat places like Perugia, Verona, Lucca, Rome, Venice and Florence to take the crown.   Essentis creates beautiful buildings in the countryside outside Matera, which is in Basilicata, near the border with Puglia.   Don't Forget... to follow us on Linkedin,Facebook and Pinterest!   invisible_1

Six Reasons to Spend Summer in Salento

mare_salento   Salento? It's one of Italy's best kept secrets. At the bottom of the heel of Italy's boot, it's a peninsula lying between two seas (the Ionian and Adriatic) and beats the oh-so-traditional Tuscany, Venice and Rome into a cocked hat! Here are six reasons why: 1. Accessibility. It's got two international airports, Bari and Brindisi, so you could be on the beach a couple of hours after you've plucked your luggage from the carousel. 2. Beaches. From white and sandy to dramatic and rugged, Salento is blessed with more than its fair share of places to swim, sunbathe, sail and sleep. Added bonus? They're Blue Flag too! 3. Cities. Where to begin? There's the lovely port of Otranto and the white city of Ostuni. You've been to Florence in Tuscany, so how about the “Florence of the south” – Lecce? It's got a Roman amphitheatre, smart shops, curly wurly Baroque architecture in fetching shades of white and a lively, friendly vibe that the “other” Florence lacks. 4. Designer shopping. Puglia may be a little less well known to foreign tourists, but the Italians have long known about this corner of their country and its fabulous shops too. MaxMara Missoni... you get the picture. 5. Entertainment. Whether you are sporty or slothful, a culture vulture or a foodie, Salento has something for you. You can walk, ride, cycle, drive, play golf or sail. Then tuck in to the freshest food you'll ever taste and the most delicious wine at one of the many reasonably priced restaurants. Take a stroll to a movie theatre or an open air show, stopping for a delicious home made gelato on the way. 6. Friendliness. Salento's locals are not jaded and fed up with tourists like residents of certain other more famous places that shall not be named! (OK, Florence, Rome, Venice.) They are open and outgoing and just love to share their beautiful area with visitors. Speak even a little Italian and you will be richly rewarded. If you are tempted, then don't forget we have a small luxurious range of exclusive masseria villas available for rent in Salento.

Stonemasons Academy - 4 April 2014

Looking up at the intricate star and barrel vaulted ceilings of an Essentis masseria and it almost defies belief that there is no mortar. The stone is so accurately cut that the pieces fit together perfectly.

Stonemansons Academy

The stonemasons working on each property are practising a craft that is centuries old and has been passed down from father to son over generations. Every master mason has his own tools, his own way of doing things and his own style. It is not easy work, but immensely satisfying. Rather like modern day da Vincis they painstakingly release masterpieces from blocks of stone, turning lumps of locally quarried pietra leccese into small pieces of art.

 academy-of-stone-imm-8

Theirs is a dying skill. Until Essentis began its masseria programme in Salento eight years ago, there wasn't much work. Young locals were not interested in learning a trade with no future. But Essentis CEO Francesco Carlucci decided to do something about that, creating Southern Italy's very first Stonemasons Academy,

academy-of-stone-imm-3

Young apprentices, rigorously interviewed to test their dedication and determination, are placed until the wing of a maestro. They form teams and learn as they go along. If their work is not up to scratch they have to repeat it again and again until it passes muster. There is only one acceptable standard – perfection.

academy-of-stone-imm-9

Each mason who works on one of our masserias is not just doing a job. He is helping create a unique building from stone. He is a vital part of the process. His heart and soul go into each tap of the chisel, each meticulously crafted piece of stone.   And thanks to the Stonemasons Academy, this skill and craftsmanship is being taught to the next generation of artisans, ensuring that this ancient profession remains alive and thriving for many years to come.

Is Puglia the New Tuscany? - 25 March 2014

Tuscany, with its patchwork fields, medieval cities, cypress-lined avenues and farmhouse-topped green hills has held foreigners in its thrall for centuries. Every year the region attracts over 14 million visitors, with its capital city Florence accounting for a million of those. It can be hard to see the “authentic Italy” when shouldering your way through crowds of tourists in the hot summer months. Buying a property in one of the hotspots (Chianti, Val d'Orcia and so on) is astronomically expensive too.

salento_puglia

A sun-drenched region flanked by sparkling seas has, for the past few years, been described as “the new Tuscany”. Puglia, located in the heel of Italy, probably only gets a quarter of the number of visitors Tuscany does and 70 per cent of its tourists are Italians.   Puglia is not on the way to anywhere else. People go there to see Puglia, not to use it as a base for travelling to other parts of Italy (except for the drop-dead-gorgeous ancient city of Matera in Basilicata). It is wilder, flatter, hotter and more rural than Tuscany. Its olive trees are more gnarled and much bigger. The food and wine is as good as, if not better, than Tuscan cuisine, but far more reasonably priced.   It has its share of fascinating cities: white-walled Ostuni with its spectacular sea views, Baroque beauty Lecce, picturesque Otranto but they are not teeming with tourists.

Otranto, 10 mins from masserie projects

Puglia is a place that you can visit year-round, unlike Tuscany. You'll have the pristine beaches to yourself, and be able to explore places that have stayed unchanged for centuries.   Is Puglia the new Tuscany? No. Puglia is unequivocally, gloriously itself, it doesn't need to bask in the reflected fame of its more famous cousin. It isn't “the new” anything. It doesn't need to be.   But is Puglia better than Tuscany? Well, that's quite another story...

SECRETS OF LECCE'S SEDILE

Lecce's ancient Sedile monument was reopened yesterday evening By Lecce's mayor Paolo Perrone along with other dignitaries, revealing newly discovered frescoes. The occasion was also marked by a concert of Baroque Venetian music in Piazza Sant'Oronzo.

The Palazzo del Sedile is a striking square building made of local stone pietra leccese - originally used for public meetings and hearings in the 16th century and the restoration work, which involved cleaning the stone facade and reinforcing the vaulted ceilings, uncovered frescoes depicting the life of Saint Irene which probably date back to 1622, although further study is needed to date them precisely.

Previously it had been thought that any frescoes that had been there were a tribute to Emperor Charles V but instead have revealed images of Saint Irene who was at the time the 'Protector' of Lecce. There do not appear to be any frescoes underneath those newly revealed by the restoration.

A Table for San Giuseppe

In Italy the 19th March is a celebration for Saint Giuseppe (Joseph, husband of Mary) and different regions celebrate in their own way, but few in such a spectacular fashion as Minervino di Lecce in Salento, Puglia.

The little town had a magnificent open table in the Piazza Umberto 1 laden with traditional dishes created by the villagers in their own homes as an expression of solidarity and love.

The festivities began on the eve of the saint's day, March 18 and continued into the evening of the 19th. The Tavola di San Giuseppe seated local dignitaries, but also, as per tradition, honoured three local Minervinesi citizens who had made an exceptional contribution in their particular field of expertise. This year they were Simone Maggio, Artistic Director of Radio Rama, Mario Mauro, Director of the Villaggio Robinson Club in Ugento and Salvatore Carecci, famous for spreading the fame of Italian cuisine in the Orient.

Puglia Town Features on Traditional English Porcelain!

Maglie has won its battle for recognition as the location of the 18th-century scene portrayed on the historic Stoke on Trent porcelain. The argument had raged between the British town of Portmeirion and the little Pugliese town located in the province of Lecce (near where we build out masseria properties).

The row was over the scene featured in the middle of the blue and white Staffordshire transfer wear. Portmeirion claimed the world-famous picture, showing a street with a column topped by the statue of the Madonna with a church on the right and a bell tower in the background, was of their Welsh town. The southern Italians begged to differ saying the street was in fact via Roma in Maglie.

The argument was resolved by an international group of specialists who came down in favour of Maglie. Professor Carmelo Caroppo said "From now on, anyone in the world who buys blue and white English porcelain with this design can be said to have chosen a real and authentic souvenir of Maglie!"

Its Still Summer in Salento!

A recent article by Alessandra del Re for the Libero news website extols the virtues of this beautiful part of Italy. In it Ms. del Re points out that once summer is over and the crowds have gone, the time is perfect to visit Salento (the tip of the heel of Italys boot).

From mid-September to mid-October is the time of the vendemmia (grape harvest) and, as the article mentions, the wine from the region now has a well deserved worldwide reputation. She mentions two in particular: The 2005 Leverano Doc Ross Riserva from the Cantina Vecchia Torre di Leverano ( the Vinitaly 2010 gold medal winner) and il Patriglione from the Azienda Agricola Cosimo Taurino di Guagnano which has been rated one of the top 100 wines in the world.

Although wine is a wonderful reason for visiting the region, you mustnt forget its other top attraction - the sea. You can still swim in Salento until mid October and the beaches are blissfully quiet although the sun is still hot enough to get a tan.

Ms. Del Re also advises venturing into 'the interior' (although the shape of the peninsula means you are never far from the sea!) and enjoying the autumn colours of the countryside and perhaps staying a few days at an agriturismo. Among the many wonderful sights to enjoy are the cities of Otranto and Tuglie near Gallipoli. Apart from visiting its fascinating museum, the Museo della Civilt Contadina you can also enjoy an ice cream at the fabulous Gelateria Provenzano in the main piazza. Imagine how wonderful it would be to stroll along in Salentos autumn sunshine eating a luscious Italian ice cream? Bliss!

Padre Pio to Move

The body of Padre Pio, now known as San Pio da Pietrelcina, the saint renowned for his healing powers, is to be moved into a new crypt adjacent to his current resting place, the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie where it has lain since 1968.

The announcement was made by the Capuchin monks and the archbishop of San Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia, this week and the saints remains will be relocated to the new San Pio church in the monastery grounds on the 19th April. The new basilica was blessed by Pope Benedict on his visit to Puglia last June.

Not everyone is happy about the move, with some commenting that the new church may be a touch too luxurious for the former Capuchin friar.

The Valle dell'Ofanto Project

The councils of Trinitapoli (north of Bari) , San Ferdinando, Canosa and Minervino Murge have decided to link up to launch a project to promote their areas and in particular the Valle dell'Ofanto. This ancient and picturesque valley is a corridor between Murgia and the Adriatic coast following the direction of the river.

The Valle dell'Ofanto is a vitally important part of this area of Puglia, rich is historical, cultural and environmental resources. At Trinitapoli there is a park, archaeological museum, wetland while at San Fenanrdino you will find country walks and industrial archaeology. Canosa has lots to offer including an archaeological museum, city canal park and the tomba di Boemondo, while Minervino Murge has the parco nazionale dell'Alta Murgia and Montecarafa.

Salento's Oil Has Hidden Depths!

When you think of olive oil it is probably as a condiment to drizzle over your salad. But there is a lot more to the ancient liquid gold than a mere tasty dressing.

It has now been scientifically proved that Salento's extra virgin olive oil is good for you on the outside as well as the inside.

Lucia Dini of the University of Salento's laboratory of Cytology and Histology explains that the "ozonizzato" oil (oil treated with ozone) has some peculiar properties arising from the process and the resulting emulsion is ideal for a number of different beauty and skin treatments. During the chemical process, the fatty acids in the oil are saturated with three atoms of oxygen. The resulting oil has protective and germicidal properties, making it an excellent anti-inflammatory application. It also improves the skin's metabolism and circulation, is effective against cellulite and helps scars heal more quickly.

Although Italy produces many varieties of oil, the most effective has been shown to be from Salento, which is excellent use for those thinking of buying a masseria from Essentis Properties as each one comes with a five acre grove of ancient olive trees. So as well as enjoying its delicious taste you can also rub it on yourself too!

More Than Meets the Eye

Salento isn't just sea and Baroque architecture. That's the message that Lecce Province in Puglia is presenting to the regional tourism forum being held today in Bari. The officer for tourism and marketing, Francesco Pacella, said that tourism his crucial for the region. She emphasized the varied nature of attractions the region has to offer: its, history, architecture, nature and produce. She went on to say that the promotion work done to date had been of great value in presenting "brand Salento" and that in the past ten years visitor numbers to the area had doubled, but that things now needed to go further.

She added that increased tourist numbers had put greater pressure on services and these needed as a consequence to make sure they responded well throughout the year, not just in the peak season.

We need to go beyond merely promoting the region "today's tourist expect more than those of the past" They have a wide variety of special interests which need to be catered for, they want a deeper and more meaningful experience when they visit' The area is not just simply Baroque and ocean,' said Pacella

The internet and low cost flights mean the dawning of a new era for tourism in the area. ?Using new technology we need to work on specific target markets, meeting their demands and going out there to present Salento to the world, rather than waiting for them to come to us,? she added.

New Archaeological Park Opens to Public at Parabita in Lecce Province
