Materials

The materials for each masseria are chosen to harmonise with the natural surroundings. Local sources are used wherever possible. Three kinds of local limestone are used in Essentis masserias.

Pietra leccese: a pale, soft limestone whose malleable and dense structure is good for carving detail.

Carparo: a very malleable stone with a slightly rougher texture and darker colour.

Pietra dei Soleto: (also known as pietra viva – living stone): a predominantly grey limestone.

The other materials used are wood, iron and natural plaster.
